This three-movement work sets Hebrew texts from Job (3:20-23, "Why give the wretched light?"), Psalm 69 ("Rescue me, O God"), and Micah 4 (1-6, "And it will happen in days to come") using symmetrical scales from Messaien's list of "modes of limited transposition," which lend themselves to unexpected modulations, especially in the midst of imitative counterpoint.
